Good To Own - Powered Lawn Edger Critique
I 'upgraded' to a gas weed whacker. Anyway, I have these vines (I found out that they are called 'runners.') that grow over the curb and across the sidewalk. Well, needless to say, that was the end of the Edge Hog. It's now in the trash, and I will never buy another B&D product as long as I live. One tug on it and it unplugs, set the blade depth to edge (not trench) or it won't make a deep clean edge line. Swing the lever out a half inch before adjusting or it remains locked. Unfortunately, this is endemic in most products sold in America these days. Companies have greatly cheapened products, and manufacture them cheaply NOT to last long (planned obsolescence).
Worked like a charm. Someone already mentioned NOT using this when the ground is really wet.
If working on dense grass, I recommend you give the motor a break every few minutes to allow it to cool. Overall, it gets the job done, but I did notice two design flaws: 1.
No refund, no replacement. A word to the wise -- especially if buying something with this name brand -- is to keep your receipts. My husband (I'm the wife who's writing the review) actually ran the edger and swept up the grass. I hadn't edged my lawn the past two summers so the grass was really overgrown.
It's like any other piece of gear: you have to figure out how it works, what it does well, and how to take advantage of its strengths. Easy to control if it doesn't make the edge you want with just one pass, so what?
It gives a cleaner cut. It's a Best buy!
I live in Florida and have St Augustine grass which is a southern species very similar to crabgrass in the northern states. Many of the roots grow horizontally on the surface of the soil and creep over pavement edges.
This edger is fantastic! I hadn't edged the property in about 6 years and this edger had no problem with the thick and heavy overgrowth.
When you are removing a lot of material, it is much easier to edge a dry lawn than a wet one. Removing 3-4 inches of wet dirt is not easy, but this unit was up to the task. I used this edger for exactly 20 minutes and the motor burned out. The funny thing is that I got this "Edgehog" as a replacement for an old edger - a much less powerful edger - that I had used for over 10 years in the same service.
